Unlimited Mail Storage for Yahoo Users

Menjelang ultah nya yang ke 10 tahun pada bulan Mei 2007 ini, Yahoo mengumumkan akan memberikan unlimited email storage for free to their Yahoomail users. Sounds to good to be true? They announce it here. Selama ini pengguna Yahoomail sudah dimanjakan dengan 1GB free email storage (2 GB for $20/year premium users) yang kayaknya gak pernah abis2 hehehe… dan sekarang malah dikasih unlimited. Malah jadi bingung dewe, mau dipake apa aja, dengan internet access speed yang limited lol…

Unlimited email storage ini, Yahoo sudah melampaui pesaing utamanya Google Mail (Gmail) yang menyediakan free 2 Gb email storage dan Live.com Mail yang juga free 2 Gb. Statistik menyebutkan bahwa Yahoo mail saat ini mempunyai 250 juta user di seluruh dunia, jauh diatas free email provider lainnya seperti Live.com dengan 228 juta user dan Gmail 51 juta user. Wajar sih, Yahoomail kan lebih lama berdiri (sejak 1997).

Dari pengalaman menggunakan Yahoo email, provider ini masih memberikan akses tercepat dibandingkan yang lainnya, dan juga feature-featurenya yang masih handy untuk regular internet user. Walaupun masih banyak juga user yang lebih menyukai fitur-fitur dari Gmail dengan ajax web based nya, yang belum bisa dikalahkan oleh Yahoo versi Beta sekalipun.
Kekurangan Yahoomail adalah mereka belum support IMAP. Begitu pula dengan fitur POP access and forwarding hanya dibeikan kepada premium users, sementara Gmail memberikan POP access and forwarding secara gratis.
Di Gmail ada satu fitur yang cukup membantu bagi pengguna email banget (yang kerjaannya email2an mulu kale hehehe..) untuk taksonomi/ pengelompokan arsip email masuk (emails tagging).
Moga-moga kompetisi kedua provider besar ini bisa memberikan yang terbaik buat rakyat jelata seperti kita :)
